Premier and Minister of Health and Wellness to Address NSNU Annual General Meeting amid growing concerns facing nurses working in Nova Scotia
Halifax (April 24, 20123) – Over the course of four days, close to 300 working nurses and nursing students are expected to attend the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union’s 46th Annual General Meeting at the Glengarry Best Western Hotel in Truro, April 25-27.
The Honourable Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness, and Premier Tim Houston will speak to attendees on April 25, the first business day of the event.
Janet Hazelton, president of the Nurses’ Union, anticipates the membership will voice their concerns to the Minister about workload and staffing shortages across all sectors of care - acute, long term and community nursing. The Premier is expected to bring greetings from the Province and address nursing and healthcare issues and initiatives.

Every year, NSNU members from across the province gather in person or virtually to deliberate over nursing and labour issues, as well as patient advocacy. Current and aspiring nurse leaders, as well as policy experts, come together to identify key nursing opportunities and strategies.

The NSNU represents over 8300 Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners and Licensed Practical Nurses working in hospitals, long term care facilities, and community care (VON and Canadian Blood Services). NSNU represents nurses in acute care in hospitals across the province including Zone 4 (formerly Capital District Health Authority); the IWK, Dartmouth General Hospital, Hants Community Hospital and Cobequid Community Health Centre. The NSNU represents most nurses working in long-term care facilities throughout Nova Scotia. The NSNU is a member organization of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions which represents over 200,000 nurses and student nurses across Canada.
