Nurses’ Union Reaches a Tentative Agreement with Long Term Care Employers
Halifax, NS - Talks that began earlier this fall between the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union and long-term care employers from across the province, successfully concluded earlier today with a tentative agreement for nurses working in that sector.
The acuity of care in nursing homes is at an all-time high, with demands on nursing staff becoming increasingly more complex. The NSNU says this agreement will help address those, and other outstanding issues faced by nurses employed in Nova Scotia’s nursing homes.
“Our long-term care nurses work very hard, and the people in their care are like family to them. The bargaining teams’ goals were to achieve an equitable agreement, allowing nurses to be compensated fairly and respected for the work they do,” says Janet Hazelton, president of the Nurses’ Union.
Details of the agreement will be shared with nurses represented at the bargaining table by the NSNU before more information is released to the public. If ratified, this wage settlement is retroactive to November 1st, 2020, and will expire October 31st, 2025.
The NSNU will conduct ratification voting in the coming days. Voting results will be made public following the vote count and notification of the nurses impacted by the new agreement. The outcome of these negotiations will affect approximately 1100 members of the NSNU.
The Nurses’ Union represents registered nurses and licensed practical nurses in 70 long term care facilities in across Nova Scotia.
