Hazelton Re-Elected for Another Two-Year Term

(Halifax, April 27/23) Janet Hazelton has been re-elected president of the Board of Director’s of the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union (NSNU). Hazelton, a registered nurse, has held the position since October 2002.

Ms. Hazelton represents 8600-plus registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nurse practitioners working in acute, long term and community care across the province.

As the nursing crisis continues to spiral, Hazelton has been vocal about the various challenges facing the professionals who make up the NSNU. Short staffing, excessive overtime, violence in the workplace, burnout, vacation denials, dangerously long shifts, physical and emotional fatigue, and more have driven some nurses away from the profession. The NSNU president says, nursing issues are of global concern and that change for the better must be imminent.

Hazelton, a long-time resident of Truro, is a graduate of the school of nursing at St. Francis Xavier. In 2010, she earned a Master of Public Administration degree at Dalhousie University. Janet sits on the Board of Directors for the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia, the Provincial Nursing Network of Nova Scotia, and the National Executive Board of the Canadian Federation of Nurses’ Unions. She is a fierce advocate for publicly delivered, publicly funded health care and universal pharmacare.

She was re-elected with a majority vote, a vote of confidence from her membership.

“I am proud of my nursing and union career. I am passionate about the work that I do and I’m energized by the mandate NSNU nurses have given me,” says Hazelton.

This latest victory means Ms. Hazelton will hold the position for another two-year term and will remain at the helm of the Council of Nursing Unions as they continue to negotiate a new contract for acute care nurses.
