A union is an organization formed by workers who come together to collectively advocate for and negotiate with employers on issues like wages, benefits, working conditions, and job security.
And so much more!
Unions are a unified voice for workers, ensuring their stake in negotiations with employers, and raising issues that influence policy making on matters that can have exponential benefits to society.
Nurses who have questions about their membership in the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union are encouraged to get to know the NSNU and all it stands for.
Nurses are the NSNU!
Nurses who may become sick or injured on or away from the job have options. Accommodations, health benefits, sick time and short or long-term disability, provide coverage until you’re able to return to work at full capacity.
Undergraduate Student Nurses are represented by the NSNU, advocating on their behalf and preparing them for the realities of nursing. The Nurses’ Union helps to shape healthcare policies and nursing standards, giving students a voice in the decisions that impact their future practice.
Unions first introduced and continue to improve upon maternity, paternity, shared parental and carer leaves. LOA, LTD and other approved time away from the job allow nurses the ability to maintain their nursing status while addressing their own needs.
For late career nurses, scheduling flexibility, mentoring and preceptor roles and the promise of guaranteed retirement income all contribute to work-life balance and peace of mind.
The nursing workforce is the largest of all the healthcare professions - the backbone of the healthcare system. Embraced by a union, a nurse’s voice is amplified many times over, increasing its influence and ability to transform.
Unions unite and empower members, advocate for appropriate working terms and conditions, and defend workers.
Unions negotiate from a position of respect to ensure workers earn a good living, have job security and work life balance.
